Summary
City Council engaged in an important debate last week when Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell introduced a resolution for the Council to support a one-year moratorium on school closings. The resolution, backed by the Philadelphia Coalition Advocating for Public Schools, calls for the delay in the closure plan of 37 schools in order to provide more details of how the schools were picked for closure and collaboration with public officials and wider community to examine the impacts of the closures.
All City Council members voted in favor of the moratorium resolution, except for Bill Green and Maria Quinones-Sanchez who voted no, and James Kenney who was absent.
